RX-processed lenses are made to order for your prescription, selected frame and lens requirements. They provide greater flexibility for higher or more complex prescriptions and improved control of lens thickness and appearance. They may be recommended when a standard stock lens is not suitable for the required prescription or frame.

A conventional single-vision lens contains one principal prescription, usually for distance, intermediate or near vision.

Advanced single-vision lenses go beyond basic prescription correction. Depending on the design, aspheric, digitally optimised or personalised lenses may provide clearer vision across a wider usable area, a flatter lens profile, improved appearance and greater everyday visual comfort.

Certain advanced designs are developed around natural eye and head movements and frequent changes in viewing direction. Accommodative-support designs are a separate type of enhanced single-vision lens that includes gentle additional support in the lower portion of the lens to reduce focusing demand during prolonged reading and screen use.

What it is

Progressive lenses provide clear vision across distance, intermediate and near within one seamless lens, without the visible dividing line found in bifocals. The lens power changes gradually from the upper distance area through the intermediate zone to the near-vision area below.

Progressive-lens designs differ in the width and positioning of their clear viewing zones, the smoothness of transition between distances and the management of unavoidable peripheral blur. Lens Types

Bifocal Lenses

What it is

Bifocal lenses provide two distinct prescriptions within one lens — typically distance vision in the upper portion and near vision in a visible segment below. Unlike progressive lenses, the change between distance and near power is immediate rather than gradual.

They are commonly prescribed for people with presbyopia who require separate correction for distance and reading and prefer one pair of spectacles for both.

Because the two powers are clearly separated, bifocal lenses can provide a wide and stable reading area. However, they do not normally provide a dedicated intermediate zone for computer or arm's-length tasks.

Visual experience and adaptation

The visible dividing line creates a sudden change in power when the eyes move between the upper and lower portions. Some wearers may notice an apparent shift in image position, often called image jump, when looking across the segment boundary. Care may also be needed when walking, using stairs or looking downward, particularly during the initial adjustment period.

Standard bifocal lenses do not provide a dedicated intermediate zone. People who spend hours using desktop monitors or other arm's-length tasks often benefit more from progressive lenses.

Children's Myopia-Management Lenses

Clear vision with support for slowing myopia progression

Myopia, or short-sightedness, causes distant objects to appear blurred. In many children, the prescription can continue to increase as the eyes grow. Earlier onset is associated with a greater likelihood of developing higher myopia later in life.

Standard single-vision lenses correct blurred distance vision but are not designed to slow myopia progression. Myopia-management spectacle lenses are specially designed to provide clear vision while helping to slow the increase in prescription and excessive eye growth in suitable children.

How the lenses work

These lenses generally contain a clear central area for the child's distance prescription, together with specially designed optical elements in the surrounding lens area. These elements create a controlled myopic-defocus signal intended to help slow further eye elongation while the child continues to see clearly through the lens. Different manufacturers use different optical designs and technologies to achieve this effect.

More than ordinary spectacles

Myopia-management lenses are intended to do more than provide clear distance vision. Clinical research supports specially designed spectacle lenses as one of several evidence-based options for slowing childhood myopia progression, although results vary between children and lens designs. They do not cure myopia or guarantee that progression will stop completely.

Regular monitoring is essential

Myopia management is an ongoing programme rather than a one-time spectacle purchase. Regular reviews are required to monitor visual acuity, prescription changes, lens fit, wearing compliance and, where clinically available, axial eye growth. The treatment plan may need to be reviewed as the child grows or if progression continues.

Time outdoors, sensible working distances and regular breaks during prolonged near work should also form part of the overall management plan.

Specialty Lenses

Office Lenses

What it is

Office lenses — also called occupational or computer lenses — are designed to provide a wider, more comfortable field of vision for near and intermediate distances. They are intended for activities such as reading, working on a laptop or desktop monitor, viewing documents, attending meetings and moving around an indoor workspace.

Unlike general-purpose progressive lenses, office lenses prioritise the distances used most frequently at work. The usable range can be selected according to the wearer's actual requirements — from close reading and computer work to wider indoor or room-distance vision.

Visual comfort at work

Prolonged desk and screen work can require repeated changes of focus between a smartphone, keyboard, documents, monitor and people across the room. Office lenses may provide wider near and intermediate viewing areas, helping the wearer maintain a more natural head and neck position while working.

Photochromic Lenses / Coating

Light-adaptive lenses for changing light conditions

What it is

Photochromic is a coating that automatically adjusts to changing light conditions. Applied to your chosen lens, it remains clear or nearly clear indoors and darkens when exposed to sunlight, providing everyday prescription vision and outdoor light protection in one pair of spectacles.

The light-sensitive molecules within the lens react mainly to ultraviolet radiation and return towards clear when the wearer moves indoors. The darkness and transition speed can vary with temperature, ultraviolet exposure, lens material and the selected product.

Standard photochromic lenses may not darken substantially inside a vehicle, because the windscreen blocks most ultraviolet radiation. Special visible-light-responsive variants are available for wearers requiring greater activation while driving.

Everyday light comfort

Photochromic can reduce the need to repeatedly change between clear spectacles and prescription sunglasses. The tint adapts to surrounding light, helping reduce brightness and improve visual comfort during routine indoor-to-outdoor movement. Available in different colours and lens materials, and compatible with most prescription designs.

Important considerations

At Lens Hut, we consider whether bright light is something you find genuinely uncomfortable, your general light sensitivity, your indoor-to-outdoor routine, driving requirements, prescription and preferred tint before recommending a photochromic coating and lens combination.

If bright light causes real discomfort — not just ordinary glare

Because photophobia can also be associated with dry eye, corneal or migraine and other ocular or neurological causes, the assessment at Lens Hut may include:

Anti-reflective coating for low-light driving

What it is

Driving in low light places greater demand on contrast and visual clarity. Reflections from the front and back surfaces of spectacle lenses can create distracting light, ghost images and reduced visual comfort, particularly around headlights, streetlights and illuminated signs.

A driving-specific anti-reflective coating is designed to reduce these lens-surface reflections, allowing more useful light to pass through the lens.

A driving coating is considered when reduced contrast or lens-surface reflections are contributing to the difficulty — not automatically for every headlight-glare complaint, and it will not create normal night vision where another visual or ocular condition is present.

Worth knowing before you choose it

Blue-Violet Light Filtering Lenses

Selective light filtering for everyday lens use

What it is

Blue-violet light filtering lenses are designed to reduce the transmission of selected short wavelengths of visible light while allowing most useful visible light to pass through. Depending on the product, the filtering technology may be incorporated into the lens material or provided through a specialised surface treatment.

They may be considered by people who spend extended periods using digital devices, work under LED lighting or prefer an additional light-filtering feature in their everyday lenses. The degree of filtration, lens appearance and visible surface reflection can vary between products.

What current research suggests

Research into blue-violet light filtering lenses remains mixed. Current evidence has not established that these lenses prevent retinal disease or consistently reduce digital eye strain, and their effect on sleep quality also remains uncertain.

Digital eye strain is influenced by several factors, including prolonged near focusing, reduced blinking, dryness, glare, lighting, screen position and an unsuitable prescription. Blue-violet filtering should therefore be considered an optional lens feature rather than a complete solution for screen-related discomfort.

Tinted lenses combining correction with sun protection

What it is

Tinted prescription lenses combine vision correction with protection from bright sunlight. They are available in different colours and levels of darkness to suit visual needs, outdoor activities and personal style.

Tint options

Grey — reduces overall brightness while maintaining relatively natural colour perception
Brown — enhances contrast and may improve visual comfort in changing outdoor conditions
